Disk hernia, back pains

Whenever back pains appear, wherever they might be located along the spine, the most common cause that patients have in mind is disk hernia. It is not always the case, though. Most of the times what we are dealing with is a severe muscular contraction generated by an incorrect body posture during the daytime. Other times there is a scar following surgery or an accident, or even a tooth problem that might cause disturbances in the muscular-skeletal system, so that, in order to keep a correct body posture, the muscles in the close vicinity of the spine get contracted in different ways and they lose the ability to relax immediately.

However, when a neurologist diagnoses a patient with disk hernia, the treatment options are rather limited to surgery, the administration of steroid and non steroidal anti inflammatory, or epidural injections with steroids.


Ozone therapy specialists have also validated a complementary method of treatment, through which the patient’s quality of life is significantly improved, and the medicines are far more efficient. We are talking about intra muscular infiltrations with ozone in the area parallel to the spine, especially where the hernia is located.

The action mechanism of ozone is based on fighting against the physiopathological effects of disk hernia and on breaking the vicious circle of its consequences. In this way, there appears a local swelling at the level of the disk fragment with consequences that lead to lumbosciatic pain episodes, if it is located at the lumbar level. The injected ozone stops the degradation of arachidonic acid in the prostaglandins and reduces the quantity of compounds that favour inflammation, thus leading to a decrease of pain. Blood flow is also affected in the herniated area, by the diminishing the oxygenated blood flow through arteries and by the diminishing of the venous return, which increases the local swelling. Local hypoxia causes pain because the nerve roots are sensitive to the lack of oxygene. Ozone increases local oxygenation through several mechanisms. Directly, by splitting a molecule into an ozone molecule and a free radical (that is combined with another radical generating another molecule), but also indirectly, by the action that it has on erythrocytes, by the increase of 2,3 diphosphoglycerate, increasing the degree of release of oxygene in tissues from oxyhemoglobine. In this way, even if there is less oxygene, it will be released faster and in higher concentrations, thus reducing the pain generated by hypoxia.

The direct effect on the herniated fragment is caused by the fact that the pulpy nucleus contains water up to 90%. By influencing the glycosaminoglycan molecules of its structure, the ozone reduces the quantity of water and therefore the dimensions of the herniated fragment.

The ozone treatment consists in injections of an ozone and oxygene mixture in the paravertebral muscles for 10-15 sessions, in the vicinity of the area affected by hernia, 3 times a week at first and afterwards twice a week. There are no allergies side effects to ozone therapy. Improvements of the general state of health are to be felt ever since the first administrations, since ozone therapy has a muscle relaxant, analgesic and anti inflammatory effect.

Also the patients’ mobility is restored since ozone intramuscular injections lead to an increase in the metabolic rate of the lactic acid and to the alteration of the local pH. So, even if there is just a severe muscular contraction and not a disk hernia, ozone injections reduce pain and restore mobility.

Ozone treatments DO NOT replace classic medical treatments, because they have a different purpose. While surgery and medicine have in view long term solutions, ozone therapy is meant to improve the patients’ condition immediately, allowing them to lead a normal life and resume their daily routines from before the disease. That is the reason why ozone therapy is con sidered a branch of complementary medicine. Ozone treatments are also adviseable in order to relieve post operatory pains following the disk hernia surgery or the ones given by spondilosis, traumas to the spine, vertebrae’s compaction or other modifications of the spinal curve that generate severe muscle contractions, chronic local inflammations and pain.

In order to obtain long term effects, besides the local injections, a treatment with 12 major autohemotransfusions is also recommended once a week, twice a year. Clinical studies, quoted by scientifical articles, prove that the ozone treatment by major autohemotransfusion increases tissue oxygenation all throughout the body. Besides, administred in this way (by extracting 100ml of blood, enriching it with ozone through bubbling and reinfusing it in the body through an IV), the ozone reduces the level of total cholesterol, of LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides. It also lowers the blood sugar levels and prevents the complications of diabetes. The anti thrombosis effect and also the increase of tissue oxygenation lower the risk of heart attack and vein thrombosis. Patients who cannot be treated with autohemotransfusions, because of physiological reasons, can, however, benefit from the systemic administration of ozone by rectal insuflations.

The ozone treatment of disk hernias or severe muscular contractions at the level of the spine is an individualized one according to the stage of the illness and to the patient’s general state. In the acute stage, ozone therapy can be associated with physiotherapy, and in remission with kinetotherapy. Ozone injections are well tolerated, and pain appears only for a short period of time and only at the place of puncture. The effects of the infiltrations can be felt after the first session, along with the disappearance of the pain!
